The solution
Smart Data partnered with Nobel Biocare’s internal team across two countries. The engagement spanned a U.S.-based UI development effort and a European ABAP and integration team. Smart Data brought a UI developer, scrum master and architect. Nobel Biocare contributed two ABAP developers, a SOAP integration developer, a project manager and a web solution architect.
Key implementation highlights
- React front end designed for B2B workflows with returns submission, exchange selection and shipping capture in a single flow
- .NET Core service layer orchestrating the return logic between front end and SAP
- Real-time SAP invoice validation via SOAP, looking up original invoices in SAP ECC and confirming pricing live
- Exchange selection with live pricing so customers see current pricing and availability before they confirm a replacement
- Multi-language and multi-currency support with regional tax and pricing logic for global B2B customers
- SSO with the Magento storefront so customers stayed inside one experience
- SOAP-based ABAP integration handling invoice lookups, pricing validation and credit memo posting back into ECC
- Two-country team coordination across US UI and European ABAP, kept aligned by a dedicated scrum master
The architecture pattern of React + .NET Core service layer + SOAP-to-SAP integration through ABAP is the cleanest path for a self-service workflow that has to live on top of an SAP-backed business.
The results
Three months in, the returns portal was running globally. Four things changed for Nobel Biocare’s customers and customer care team:
A high-volume customer service workflow moved off phone and email and into self-service
Global B2B customers got a returns experience in their language and currency
Customer care team time freed up for the issues that genuinely needed human attention
A global B2B returns workflow that lives on top of SAP turned out to be self-service-ready when the integration is done right
A cross-country, cross-company engineering team worked as a single unit and shipped a regulated medical device industry returns portal in three months.
