A 401(k) services firm used a client portal so that its staff and its customers could manage financial investments. The firm served a small market and wanted to grow its customer base in specific target industries, but the existing application was limited.

The work started with one developer from SDS, a Smart Data company, joining the client's internal team to enhance the product. As the firm acquired several other businesses, it asked for a dedicated team to build a new client portal.

The challenge

  • An existing portal too limited to support growth into new markets
  • A goal of growing specific target markets tenfold
  • New integration points needed with existing software
  • A growing business, with acquisitions adding to the demands on the platform

The solution

  • Started with one developer embedded in the client's team, making enhancements to the existing product
  • Moved to a dedicated team of five .NET developers with complementary expertise
  • Built a new client portal for both internal and external users, with the aim of getting it online as quickly as possible
  • Added integration points with the client's existing software
  • Kept improving the existing codebase to add value-based functionality

The results

  • The client portal was central to the firm extending its reach tenfold in its target markets

  • A platform both staff and customers could use, ready for a business growing through acquisitions
