# Modernizing the platform that helps elderly people live independently

Smart Data replaced VRI's aging customer management system with a modern .NET Core and React web application and a dedicated wearable device monitoring API, used to coordinate care for elderly customers across emergency contacts, medications and location data.

VRI provides services for elderly people living independently at home. The platform exists to help caregivers, family members and emergency response teams stay connected to the people they monitor: medications, physician contacts, emergency contacts, wearable alert devices and current location. The existing system was old, slow and buggy. Customer service representatives, family members and internal teams all needed reliable access to that data, and the existing platform was getting in their way.

Smart Data built a modern .NET Core and React web application backed by SQL Server, alongside a dedicated wearable device monitoring API designed from day one to be reusable across VRI’s broader ecosystem of caregiver-facing tools.

## The challenge

The legacy customer management system was getting in the caregiver’s way. Four problems mattered most:

- The system was slow, buggy and frustrating for customer service representatives, family members and internal teams to use
- The platform needed to serve as the system of record for both internal users and external customers from a single codebase
- Wearable device integration had to work with custom hardware that off-the-shelf libraries didn’t fully support
- Emergency response workflows depended on fast, reliable access to medication, contact and location data

The replacement had to be more than a UI refresh. It had to handle the operational data flows that real-world emergencies depend on, and the wearable integration had to be designed for reuse across other VRI applications.

## The solution

Smart Data partnered with VRI’s product owner, internal QA and existing development team to plan and execute the replacement. A small Smart Data team of two developers and a scrum master worked alongside VRI’s product owner, dedicated tester and occasional internal development support.

### Key implementation highlights

- Modern .NET Core web application for both internal and external users, backed by SQL Server
- Role-appropriate views so internal users and external customers consumed the same underlying data with the right permissions
- Wearable device monitoring API designed as a first-class internal product, not a feature; the API is reusable by other applications in VRI’s ecosystem
- Custom Bluetooth drivers for wearable hardware where off-the-shelf libraries didn’t fit
- React front end built around the workflows VRI’s team actually performs
- IIS-hosted infrastructure integrated with VRI’s existing Windows environment
- Architectural decision to elevate the wearable API from feature to product, which paid back across every VRI tool that needed the same device event data

Treating an internal API as a first-class product rather than a one-off integration is one of the highest-leverage architectural calls in any platform replacement. The decision to do that early in the project shaped the value VRI captured later.

## The results

Caregivers, family members and VRI’s customer service team got a platform that stopped getting in their way. Four operational changes:

A modern application replaced the old, slow, buggy system caregivers and VRI staff had been working around

The wearable monitoring API became a reusable building block other tools in VRI’s broader caregiver-facing ecosystem plug into

Internal and external user access landed in a single codebase with role-appropriate views for caregivers, family and customer service

Technical debt that had been slowing emergency-response workflows for people living independently at home is gone

The wearable API decision early in the project shaped the value VRI captured later. Designing it as a reusable internal product rather than a one-off integration gave the rest of the company’s tooling a clean way to plug in.
